Free Market, the Irish National Pavilion at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia 2018 won widespread acclaim for its exploration of the unique identity of Irish rural towns when it showed in Venice in 2018. The project is a study of the market places of small Irish towns, that have been observed for what they are, and what they could be. The public realm – the market places, streets and squares – is key to the civic and social lives of these towns but is undermined by poor planning and fragmented decisions. In 2019 this ambitious exhibition traveled to four towns in Ireland, that formed part of the research, and in each stop the ongoing discourse of what we can learn from these small towns continued. Free Market is Co-Commissioned and Curated by Jeffrey Bolhuis, Jo Anne Butler, Miriam Delaney, Tara Kennedy, Laurence Lord and Orla Murphy.
