The StreetSpace project led by Dr Agustina Martire has been working in collaboration with the Department for Communities, Belfast City Council and local communities for the past 3 years to investigate streets in Belfast, by looking into the stories and experiences of residents and proposing spaces and buildings for the community.

During the past 14 months, in partnership with Sailortown Regeneration and Household, the StreetSpace MArch studio explored Sailortown, so that we can better understand the needs of a resident and displaced community. The studio also provided ideas for a better future for the built environment of Sailortown, one that caters for the needs, memories, and ambitions of a diverse and authentic community.

In preparation for the next StreetSpace workshop in June 2021 we held an online meeting on November 6th to share the work done so far. We invited those interested in the history, present and future of Sailortown to join us for one hour of presentations and one hour small group discussions. There were over 60 participants in the symposium, who attended the presentations by Terry McKewon from Sailortown Regeneration, Alissa Kleist, Jane Butler and Sean Greer from Household and Dr Agustina Martire. The round tables were open for discussion about housing; children; culture; public space and mobility; and work and industry. The event was a great introduction for what we hope will be an ongoing collaboration with wider stakeholders of the area, who will meet again in June in a two day workshop.
